Taking the Bible out of context to fit your personal beliefs or agenda is like having someone take your words and twist them to say something you did not mean to say at all.
One of the crucial things I’ve noticed, especially over the last two years of covid, is that there is not a proper understanding of how to interpret and apply God’s Word correctly to life situations. Over the next number of blogs I will show you how to observe, interpret and apply scripture in context.
“Taking something out of context to fit your personal beliefs or agenda is like having someone take your words and twist them to say something you did not mean to say at all."
When using Bible verses, applications are numerous, but interpretations are not.
Context rules!
God’s Word is precious just like the words you say and it needs to be handled correctly. Otherwise, when biblical context is taken out of context, the truth is distorted and the words are made to mean what they did not mean to the original audience, often as a way of (inaccurately) making an application to a current situation.
When using Bible verses, applications are numerous, but interpretations are not. Right application can only be applied once the correct interpretation has been identified. Skipping the first step is a recipe for misapplication and possibly spiritual harm to yourself and others. Knowing the audience, the historical and cultural context, and the place in God’s redemptive plan are critical for a legitimate understanding of the biblical text. Always remember: Context rules!
Together, let’s take this moment to “be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without deviation", (2 Timothy 2:15 NAS).
